Brown Drakes are burrowing mayflies (family Ephemeridae). Hatches typically occur in late May or early June, but may happen later in the year, depending on the river. The Brown Drake is found in trout streams nationwide. It is a very large mayfly that is usually found in slower moving water of streams and some lakes.

The Maccaffertium Vicarium mayfly begins hatching when the water temperature reaches 40-45 degrees usually beginning in March! The hatch is usually in the afternoon, and a spinner fall occurs later on in the day. The Brown Drake fly pattern imitates this adult mayfly very well. These are generally big mayflies that drive trout crazy!
